Meet Morina!
Morina is a member and treasurer of the Honey Island Rollers and has been playing roller derby since 2020. As a jammer, Morina is responsible for scoring points by lapping members of the opposing team. You’ll have to forgive her for occasionally screaming while being chased by an opposing blocker… the thrill is just too powerful.
Before joining the Honey Island Rollers, Morina had participated in the lonely sport of running for 10 years. However, roller derby presented a unique challenge for her, as it is a team sport – something she was unfamiliar with. She admits that she is a slow learner, nevertheless, she persevered and has been able to develop derby skills over time.
Morina found that roller derby has opened doors for her, both personally and professionally. “I became treasurer for HIR in 2021,” she said, “and after achieving some really important milestones for the league, I used my love for organisation and spreadsheets to get my current job.”
One of the things that Morina loves most about roller derby is the sense of teamwork that it fosters. In order to be successful, the entire team needs to work together and support each other. This has not only helped Morina on the track, but it has also had an impact on her professional life as a project manager at a marketing agency.
Morina’s favourite movie is Orlando, which she describes as a dark fairytale that transcends genres, time, and gender. Her advice to new skaters is to practice and never give up. She acknowledges that learning new skills can be difficult, but with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible.
What Morina loves most about the Honey Island Rollers is the resilience and determination of the team. Despite setbacks and challenges, the league continues to make strides forward and celebrate their victories, no matter how small they may be.
In conclusion, roller derby has proven to be a life-changing experience for Morina, both personally and professionally. Her dedication and perseverance are an inspiration to anyone who wants to take on a new challenge.
