Melon, player number 22, is a rising star in the world of Maltese roller derby. She currently skates with the Honey Island Rollers (HIR) and has been playing since January 2021 as part of the Gen 1 rookie program. Although Melon is still working on finding her position on the team, she’s great as both a blocker and a jammer. She’s become well known for her infamous 2-minute jams as lead jammer! Her dedication and love for the sport have made her a valuable member of HIR.
Before discovering roller derby, Melon was an avid sports player, participating in activities such as football, basketball, tennis, and swimming during her school years. However, roller derby has captured her heart, and it is now her favorite sport. When she’s not skating, Melon enjoys watching romantic comedies like “Imagine Me and You” and eating pizza – her favorite food.
Melon’s advice to new skaters is simple but powerful: never give up. If you’re struggling with a skill, just keep trying, and one day it will magically click. Her persistence and determination are evident in her approach to roller derby. She is always striving to improve her skills and become a better player.
Off-track, Melon helps out in many ways – HIR is self-run, meaning there’s always work to be done! Melon gives a hand in human resources and treasury, and she has recently taken on the role of Gear Officer.
What Melon loves about HIR is not just the sport itself but also the sense of community and belonging that comes with being a part of the team. She feels like she has found her people and is excited to continue growing and learning with them.
Melon is an inspiration to new and experienced roller derby players alike. Her dedication, positive attitude, and love for the sport are contagious and make her a valuable member of the Honey Island Rollers. We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next on the track.
