Spyro, a roller derby player who uses the pronouns they/them, is an incredible member of the Honey Island Rollers (HIR), a Maltese team. Known as Spyro on the track, they proudly wear the number 5 on their jersey. Spyro brings their unique perspective and high energy energy to the sport of roller derby.

Spyro’s roller derby journey began in 2022 when they joined the HIR rookies program. From there, they advanced to the main league and have never looked back. Prior to discovering roller derby, Spyro did not participate in any organised sports as an adult, except for cycling to and from work.

Outside of roller derby, Spyro works as a science communicator, bringing a passion for knowledge and education to their profession. Their ability to effectively communicate and engage with others translates well to their role on the track and their role as part of the training committee.

When it comes to favourites, Spyro’s go-to song is “Venga Bus,” a catchy tune that never fails to bring a smile to their face. Their advice to new skaters is to embrace falling and make it a regular part of their training. Additionally, they suggest doing laundry while on skates, adding a fun twist to everyday tasks.

What Spyro loves most about HIR is the incredible and supportive community that surrounds them. Roller derby has allowed them to meet wonderful people and forge lasting connections. Spyro finds joy in both the camaraderie off the track and the opportunity to engage in friendly competition on it, relishing the chance to hit their fellow skaters within the regulatory parameters of the game.

Spyro is an inspiring and valued member of the Honey Island Rollers. Their enthusiasm for roller derby, dedication to personal growth, and love for the inclusive community make them an essential part of the team.
