Angie is a roller derby player with the Honey Island Rollers, a Maltese team. Her derby number is 27.
Angie’s journey in roller derby began when she watched the movie “Whip It” and instantly fell in love with the sport. However, at the time, roller derby hadn’t reached Malta’s shores. It wasn’t until 2021 that she discovered the Honey Island Rollers, and she signed up to be a part of it. Since then, roller derby has been the longest sport she has proudly been a part of.
Before roller derby, Angie tried plenty of sports including tennis, ballet, and gymnastics, but nothing appealed to her enough to stick with for long. She then took up skateboarding for a while and picked it back up in 2020 during lockdown. Her experience with skateboarding has helped her become an agile jammer on the track.
As an affiliate marketing manager, Angie has learned how to balance her professional life with her passion for roller derby. She believes that playing roller derby has taught her how to fall down and have the breath knocked out of her, but get back up and skate as fast as she can for her team.
Angie’s favourite food is seafood and fish, and she encourages new skaters not to be disheartened by contact. She believes that eventually, they will start looking forward to hitting and being hit (within regulatory parameters, of course).
For Angie, the best part about playing for the Honey Island Rollers is the amazing and strong people on the team. She loves being able to go to training and just forget everything while on the track. Roller derby has given her a sense of community and purpose that she never thought possible.
