Thinking about joining Malta’s only roller derby league? You’ve come to the right place. Let’s get rolling!
Rolling Recruitment is open!
We switched to rolling recruitment which means you can join any time during the season. Send us a message on our socials or via email to let us know you’d like to try it!
Rookie Program
New recruits in derby start by learning the basics. This is where we teach you the foundations of roller skating – like how to fall safely, how to move forward and backward, and also how to skate for roller derby. You’ll be paired with an experienced skater and you’ll join our training sessions twice a week to develop your skills.
You’ll need a full set of gear before starting – read on to find out the requirements.
Requirements
Our one and only requirement is that you must be over 18 years of age. Sorry, notes from mama won’t cut it. You don’t need any previous skating experience, we’ll teach you how to skate from the ground up.
You will need to have gear before you start skating. That includes:
- Derby quad skates (the low cut boot allows for ankle flexibility)
- Knee pads
- Elbow pads
- Wrist guards
- Mouthguard
- Helmet
You can rent a full set of gear (except for the mouthguard – nobody wants to share those!) right from the Honey Island Rollers. Sizes are limited so get in touch with us to find out if yours is available.
At the moment skates are not available to buy in Malta. Sizing is in US men’s so do get in touch with us for recommendations or to try on a pair if you’re in doubt. We’ve also got second hand gear for sale at a discounted price, this is a great option because you can try before you buy and get your hands on them almost immediately. For new gear, here is our recommended supplier.
Here is a complete guide of all your gear needs to start Roller Derby. If you have more questions, check out our FAQ. We have our own skates that you can try on to check size before ordering – send us a message to set up a try-on session!
Derby names
Your roller derby identity can be totally different from your everyday civilian human identity. Go nuts! We get to choose our own derby names and puns are always encouraged. If you pick something long, keep in mind that it will most likely be shortened in conversation. Our league is Maltese, so Maltese language names are definitely a possibility, and that opens up tons of options. Are you our next Agatha Barbarian? Check out our league members for some inspiration.
Ok I’m in. How do I join?
Send us a message and we’ll have a chat, then let you know the next steps.
